Malinois for Family

I often hear that Belgian Malinois are not good family pets. Malinois can be a family dog - but they will take work... lots of work.  And many are still not suitable. (I don't leave my dogs loose in the house until I can trust them.  Typically around 8 years old - okay I'm exaggerating... a little). Training must be taken seriously.  Some working lines are easier to acclimate to family life than others.

One of my favorite characteristics of my dogs is that they are "close" to their people. They would rather be with you than eat.  However, they are likely to meet strangers with suspicion or even aggression. You must be active and the dog needs to be part of your day to day life.  They want to learn and obey their master as its the job they're meant to do.  It's a good idea to go to a local club and get involved before buying a puppy.

The Malinois is becoming more and more popular and I see many first time owners with their pups.  I'm sure some will adjust just fine to the new addition but it is not always easy and there is a big concern that these dogs will wind up in shelters because their owners can't live with them.  A Malinois is a serious commitment so please be sure you have the energy levels to keep up.
